I can not express how much fun everyone had at Jason and Lauren's wedding. As a professional there are many experiences that I have had throughout ones big day. When I say Jason and Lauren's wedding celebration was perfect. I mean perfect!!!!

The temperature was a cool 62 degrees with a bit of light rain that lasted less the 5 min. Those rain clouds made for a huge diffuser of light... allowing us to create some pretty fun looks. The wedding party, guests, and Jason and Lauren's parents were so RESPECTFUL and KIND to work with!!! Everyone truly made this day special for this sweet couple.

It had appeared that Jason must have gotten a bit hungry on our way to the Swan Club as there was a wedding party pit stop at Taco Bell LOL so fun!!!!!

Thank you Jason and Lauren Robinson for such a wonderful experience. Congratulations to you both. Wishing you a happy and blessed marriage together. You are the BEST!

What to look for when hiring a senior photographer in a saturated senior photography market

Greetings all. As many of you know here at Ambient I put high value in honing in on my craft. The past 5 years I have spent countless hours and monetary contributions into furthering my photography education. Not only to improve my skills, but, to keep up with the ever so FASTLY changing market and demand in SENIOR PHOTOGRAPHY.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I can be quite an introvert in uneasy situations. My best friend pushed me the hardest with getting out and networking within our industry. At that time I really did not understand the importance of his words. Unease as all heck I vowed to myself that I would start a conversation with another photographer at a conference that my BFF and I had attended. The conference was very overwhelming to say the least. I felt as though I was back in collage at the first day of classes. Needless to say I did not have to break the ice, someone came up to me and asked me a question. We engaged in a valued, intellectual conversation. Just like that my goal had been met. I have my first networking support system. I am still friends to this day with her.

Through the years I have made some great friends and colleagues. This passed week I attended this same conference that I did when I met my new colleague friend. I had the opportunity to meet and take a "Newbie" into our community. She shared with me that she held many of the same feelings that I had my very first year. I was glad that we were able to chat and to take her under my wing for a bit. I encouraged her to do the same to another new member of the photography conference next year as she will be a well seasoned conference veteran LOL

While at the conference I reminisced on to where my photography lighting skills were 5 years ago... I decided to take an educational opportunity from a very respected educator, and photographer. This class was based on creating images with existing or natural light. I always enjoy seeing growth in a person. So, today I decided to look at my own personal growth. The image BELOW I captured about 5 years ago utilizing the suns full natural light. At the time of capturing this image I was very pleased with the posing and composition. I had a beautiful subject, she was pretty well lit. I never noticed the sun blotches on her nose and forehead. Her left arm was completely over exposed. Her hair does not lay natural. I could go on and on with the faults in my work that I NOW see.

When you look at the images below. You can recognize that there is definitely something different with these images verse the above image. Same Photographer, Same type of lighting, natural/existing light.

Fast forward 5 years of countless hours of education, persistence and innovation... here are some of my recent images utilizing the same form of light... Natural/existing light.

My take away for you from this BLOG is when you are choosing your photographer for your once in a lifetime SENIOR photos. Just don't look at the PRICE POINT. Study their work, study their style. Do you see progression over the years in their skills? Does the photographer have award winning images in the photography industry? Don't be afraid to interview them. After all you are their new employer for your senior's session.

By educating yourself prior to committing to your chosen senior photographer you will have an ease about how your photos will be captured.

It is imperative that your photographer demonstrates a proven track record of consistently producing quality work that is recognizable to their brand and that you will LOVE. During your senior session is NOT the time that you want a beginner photographer practicing new techniques that they just learned. Otherwise, you may end up with only a few good images!

2) The Headlines....

What is another way of identifying if the photographers work is legitimate?

Check out and see if they have been featured on a legit senior blog, or even better yet.. Has their work been published in a magazine? This will show you that the photographer that you are hiring is setting the standard throughout the industry. You are hiring a sought out Senior Photographer!

3) Photo Products...

Besides meeting and spending time with my senior clients... I love the part of their session where they choose to share their personal stories with me. Morgan's session was capture at her grandparents property. I love to have as much family present for my seniors session... Tonight we were blessed to have three generations present for Morgan's session. The stories that each of the ladies shared with me where priceless!!! Two stories in particular that struck warmth in my heart... Morgan and her Mother requested to have one of her locations in a screened in porch. Morgan shared that as a child she drifted away to a restful nap many afternoons in a particular bed facing the families lane. The serenity and tranquility in this beautiful room was amazing. The second story that was shared was when Morgans Grandmother came driving out of the garage in a vintage, gorgeous MG. This car holds quite the story and sentimental value to this family. How could we not have a little fun with it during her session?!? Thank you Morgan for the wonderful session and making a memory or two for me!!!

When Renee asked me to photograph her and Jon's very special day I was beyond honored. The weather was a beautiful 85 degrees with full sunshine. The ladies got ready in the very family historic parlor in Jon's family home. While I was capturing Renee's photos in the parlor it was so fitting to capture the photos in vintage presentation.

Their wedding celebration was held in the elegantly decorated barn on the Mueller farm homestead that was established in the 1800's. During the wedding ceremony Jon presented Ari with a very special ring that was provided to him years ago. It was such a beautiful and heartwarming moment to capture and to be part of.

Ambient Photography Kewaunee Photo Competition Results

As one may notice I choose to enter my work in image competitions, submit for magazine publications and enter photo contests... By nature having a strong type A personality that I do comes that of the state of competition. When I submit my photography work I am not only competing with fellow photographers... I am competing with myself. I have found that competitions do not only drive me to work harder at my craft....they push me out of my comfort zone. Ultimately causing me to learn something new so that I can better serve you my clients.
This is my second year submitting my work here at Ambient to the Shoot and Share contest. This contest is a world wide contest that anyone can enter and vote. During the voting phase a voter has 4 random photos to chose from and vote for one out of the random 4 selections. There are 12 elimination rounds. To advance to the next round... One must obtain a specific number of votes to advance. I am not sure on the total number of photos submitted to the contest this year. A week prior to the close of the photo submissions I do know that there were over 500,000 photo submissions.
I am pleased to announce Ambient's standings and photos that earned badge awards for the 2020 Shoot and Share Contest. Congratulations to all of my subjects that placed this year in the contest.

5 Important Qualities to consider when choosing your high school senior photographer

It is that time of year again.. Senior photo season. Each year I like to educate folks on specific qualities to look for when choosing your senior photographer.

BEFORE YOU EVEN LOOK AT PRICING!!!!

1) Check out their website, social media page(s) what does their work look like.. Ask yourself these questions... Do I like their style of photography? What drew me to their web page? How busy are they as a photographer? Can I see myself as one of their subjects that they capture?

2) If you are seeing what you are liking so far... Check out how detailed oriented that the photographer is...Do they pay attention to the smallest details? Such as messy hair on the shoulders, uneven tie strings on guys hoodies, wrinkling of clothing. Can you see daylight through the subjects hair. Did the photographer position their subject correctly so you can see both arms when photographing. Nothing worse then getting a great photo captured and it looks like an arm is missing.

3) Call the photographer that you are interested in... Get a feel for their personality. Will the photographer be a good fit for your senior and your family?What is their turnaround time for getting back to you for your inquire? Are they showing true interest in you and your senior? Are they excited when they hear from you regarding your interest? Can you hear it in their voice?

4) What are folks saying about their experience with the photographer. Check out their testimonials... the photographer will gladly give you access to touch base personally with the folks that have had a photography experience with them. Ask around the community what are folks saying? Word of mouth is the best testimonial of ones experience.

5) Ask the photographer questions... Do they offer products besides gift prints. Products such as albums, large wall art, canvases, metal and acrylic prints. Ask the quality of the printing lab that they use. Labs can very in quality. Cheaper isn't always what one desires in the final product....This quality is very evident in the printing.

I have been asked by fellow photographers why I have chosen to specialize in High School/Senior Photography? That answer for me is quite simple. I question back? Why not? The kids that choose to come to Ambient are full of life, know what they want from their session, LOVE to have fun and are not afraid to be themselves. That is the exact story I want to tell. I like to sneak a couple of fun and defining ones in during the session as well!

Each session that I have with a Senior is very individualized to their wants and needs. My Seniors parents are very involved throughout the entire experience at here Ambient. I value their suggestions, willingness to help or if they so choose, simply sit back and enjoy this once in a life time experience.

Having your senior photos captured is a very important time in your life! When you are making your decision on what photographer is the best fit for you... Here are a couple tips to consider...

1) Is their editing style consistent to their brand?

2) Are they able to capture the real you? Are you noticing forced posing or are their clients looking natural in front of their lens?

3) Look at the composition of their captured photos? Are their lines leading to their subject?

It is imperative that your photographer demonstrates a proven track record of consistently producing quality work that is recognizable to their brand and that you will LOVE. During your senior session is not the time that you want a beginner photographer practicing new techniques that they just learned. Otherwise, you may end up with only a few good images!

2) The Headlines...

What is another way of identifying if the photographers work is legitimate?

Check out and see if they have been featured on a legit senior blog, or even better yet... Has their work been published in a magazine? This will show you that the photographer that you are hiring is setting the standard throughout the industry. You are hiring a sought out Senior Photographer!

3) Photo Products...

I will never forget the look on one of my client's Mothers face when she opened the Acrylic photo album of her beautiful daughter... Tears fell from her eyes as she sat in silence staring at the pages. That moment is what it is all about... Creating a beautiful EXPERIENCE... The time old question that comes up with preparation for ones senior photos... What should I wear?

When choosing colors that best flatter ones skin complexion and hair color combination... I strongly encourage a senior to consider colors that blend with neutral earth tones and deep penetrating colors... such as...Navy Blue, Burgundy, Shades of Gray, Olive/ Hunter Green and Mustard. I Strongly discourage bright and fluorescent colors as well as Red....as they tend to not photograph to true color and like to reflect back onto ones skin tones. This can distract from ones illuminating facial features being captured.

I suggest keeping patterns simple as well! If one chooses to have a pattern top. I suggest keeping the rest of your outfit in a pretty simple fashion.

What to Expect 1 Month Prior to your Session...

First, Make sure that you schedule your Senior Session early with Ambient Photography! My most popular summer and fall dates generally book 2-3 months in advance.

Once you have booked your session let the creativity begin... Browse pinterest to generate some ideas of your desired style for your session.

Attend an one on one consultation session with Ambient Photography to discuss your session location choice, desired wants, what to expect during your session, and recommendations of the best color pallet for your skin tones.

3-4 Weeks Prior to your Session...

Start gathering your clothing options. I suggest bringing 5-10 outfits along for your session. One of course always bring along a classy change. Whether it be a dress shirt and tie, or a suit to GQ it up for the gentlemen... or a nice dress or formal for the beautiful ladies. Mothers and Grandmothers LOVE the dressed up look!

Make sure that you have you hair trimmed or colored to your liking about 2-3 weeks prior to your session.

Definitely try not to get sunburned as well. The burnt look really isn't in... LOL

One Week Prior to Your Session...

Make sure that all your clothing is TRIED ON to make sure it fits properly, ironed and hung on hangers. Please include all accessories that you are wanting with a particular outfit to be stored in a plastic zip bag and adhere to the outfits hanger.

Make sure that you are well hydrated including your lips. The week leading into your session apply chap stick so as to not have chapped lips.

Gentlemen... I recommend shaving the night before your session to lessen the likelihood of having a red face.

The Day of your Session...

Give yourself enough time to prepare for your special day! Especially if you have a hair and makeup appointment... No need to be rushed for making your memories!!! Make sure that your teeth are brushed and flossed, nails, hands and eyebrows are well groomed. These tiny details can make or break an AMAZING photo of yourself!

Have enough to eat prior to your session. Again drink plenty of water to stay hydrated!!! Well hydrated skin glows in photos.

Bring extra blotting tissues, powder and lip hydration as in the heat we melt fast!

Happy New Year to you my loyal clients... I love putting together a year in review on New Year's Day. It allows for me to see what Ambient Photography has all accomplished this last year, it shows the growth that has occurred, the new and exciting experience that I have endured, friends that have been made along the way, as well as, the progression in my skills. Each year I set 30 day, 90 day and year goals. I am proud to say that I have accomplished the meeting of all my 2018 goals. I was able to attend all the continuing education that I set forth to do, got to have couple wonderful conversations throughout the year with the man that I so look up to in the industry, met new friends in the business that I continue to network with, and completely revamped my business framework for 2019 to better serve you! The biggest accomplishment that hit home for me 2018 was when I got a personal pat on the back from the industries leading photographer and educator.... Sal Cincotta. I was blessed to have been able to share a seat with him during a bus ride from a shooting location. That 40 minutes of conversation was like a million dollar educational experience to me. One of my goals this year was to submit some of my images to Shutter Magazine. For those who do not know.. Shutter Magazine is one of the industries top photography magazine. Sal is the CEO of this amazing photography magazine. He is personally involved with day to day operations as well as choosing what photos are published in Shutter Magazine. As our conversation flowed, I did a lot of listening and figuring out how I could incorporate his knowledge and advice to me into Ambient Photography. During our visit he asked to see my website and social media pages. Like anyone would have been... I was reluctant to show him. But, with confidence and he gave me no choice (LOL) I let him preview my work. Little did he know who I was until he saw that I was published several times in his magazine. I will forever remember the look on his face when he pointed out my work and said " This your work? I remember these" ' Girl, Keep up the F...... Good work. You are going places. You have to have talent to get published in my Magazine" with that connection by simply sitting down next to each other and carrying on a conversation further strengthen who I am professionally. Granted there will always be people that are negative and not always agree with my thoughts or my work. But, to have had this experience is worth the world to me!!!

Looking back for accomplishments for 2018:

Record Session year here at Ambient, Added studio 110 shooting location, Added consultation studio in Kewaunee, completed student job fair at Kewaunee High School, continue to volunteer for Kewaunee School district events, attended education in Las Vegas, Chicago, St. Louis, Student ambassador program had record breaking numbers, published in Shutter Magazine and co-taught photography classes in the Green Bay area!

What a Year... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Can not be said enough for your continued support!
